After seven years vying for Ernst & Young's Greater Washington Entrepreneur Of the Year ? including being a finalist five times ? Ric Edelman was named a winner at Thursday evening's 2001 awards banquet. This year's competition attracted more than 150 qualified candidates, making it one of the toughest competitions in the event's 12-year history.
Edelman won Entrepreneur of the Year for Retail/Consumer Products & Services category. He is the founder of Edelman Financial Services Inc. ranked by Bloomberg as the 5th-largest financial planning firm in the nation, with 5,400+ clients and $1.7 billion in client assets. Inc. magazine named the firm the fastest-growing planning firm in the nation three times (1995-1997). Equally impressive, the firm has never incurred any debt and has been profitable every year since its inception in 1987.
Upon winning the award, Ric remarked that he had little to say, saying, "I quit writing an acceptance speech five years ago." He also told the audience of more than 1,000 that he intended to place the award alongside a gift bought for him two years ago by his staff ? a Susan Lucci doll. Lucci, the famous soap opera actress, was nominated for an Emmy 17 times before finally winning.
